Sintra, Portugal

Hi, I’m Alma Cox. I almost named this newsletter, “Brush + Soul.” “Brush” because painting is my favorite way to make art and you’d know you landed somewhere artsy. “Soul” because creativity and beauty are tenets of the soul. But it seemed too lofty when I’m still growing in confidence as an artist, even after 24 years of painting! I chose Creator Alma for my website’s 5th iteration and social handles as a way to OWN my confidence. Creator Alma is more of an intention—helping me be the content creator I see myself as. Already it has helped me expand how I share my work.

I nurture creative confidence in myself and in others. Creative confidence that embodies freedom—that doesn’t look to others for approval. I’m tired of making art while my mind travels old roads of comparisons. Directing me to do as others do for elusive success. I’m in this for the joy. I’m stubborn about creating to please my heart. If what happens here pleases you, then it’s a bonus—more joy for all of us!

In this season of my life coziness is a priority. I put on my robe to paint like it’s a cape with superpowers. I paint the world my heart is most happy to dwell in—like nestling deep in an oversized chair with a great book, surrounded by things I love. Do you love to paint with freedom—like a child? Me too.

I’m deeply grateful to Creativity (I like to personify her ☺️), for showing me how fun it is to trust the creative process which I love to talk about a lot, especially on my YouTube channel and now here, on Substack. Creativity gives me things to discover, and that is just the best.

So, in a nutshell, in this newsletter you can expect:

💫 The stubborn pursuit of Joy

💫 A lot of cozy art

💫 Reverence for Creativity and her best friend, Discovery

A little more about me:

I completed an Ironman when I was 33. It’s significant because during that time I watched a show called “Simply Quilts” where I saw a beautiful art quilt of an Iris that changed my life. I went from training for hours every day to applying my can-do spirit to art quilts, then to painting, then to writing a book about an art process I created called, Telamadera Fusion. Following that I taught classes to hundreds of people, opened a gallery, sold lots of art and wrote a fiction novel about an artist in her forties who discovers her soul through her creativity.

Today I live in Lisbon, Portugal. I love to travel, especially discovering and being inspired by new places. My passion for things and architecture of the Old World fits in perfectly with a love of home and its comforts. I was born in San Francisco, California and The City will always hold a very special place in my heart. I share a beautiful life with my high school sweetheart and we have two adult children we adore.
